 NOTIFY YOUR OWN INSURANCE COMPANY

Most people never report an accident in which they are involved to their own insurance company if it was another person's fault. The failure to timely notify your own insurance could be a costly error. There are many reasons that you need to notify your own insurance company even if the collision was not your fault.

  • Underinsured/Uninsured Motorist Coverage.
If the wrongdoer has no insurance coverage, his insurance company disputes coverage, or he does not have enough coverage to pay for your injuries, your insurance policies' uninsured/underinsured coverage may apply. If you not give them timely notice in Georgia, they may be able to deny your claim. You can stack uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage together to provide additional coverage above and beyond what the wrongdoer's coverage provides. For example, if you have medical bills in the amount of $ 30,000.00 and the wrongdoer only has coverage in the amount of $ 25,000.00, then you need to look to your own policy to provide coverage in excess of the $ 25,000.00. You would subtract the $ 25,000.00 liability coverage from the $ 30,000.00 uninsured/underinsured coverage on your policy to gain an additional $ 5,000.00 in coverage above what the wrongdoerr's policy limits. If you have two $ 30,000.00 policies, then you would be able to recover $ 35,000.00 (30,0000 + 30,000 - 25,000 = 35,000) in underinsured coverage if your case warranted such amounts
  • Medical Payments Coverage.
This coverage is optional. However, if you purchased medical payments coverage from your insurance company, it is the primary or first line of payment for injuries sustained in an auto collision. If you fail to notify them or timely submit your medical bills, then your claim could be denied later on.
  • Rental Coverage.
Many policies provide as an option payment of rental expenses when the wrongdoer's insurance will not pay or has no such coverage. You may not be aware of this coverage in your policy.
